This SURF8 or 8x has the water drained out and shows lots of growth attached to the Green Grabber® strings. If the strings were not there, the growth would not have any place to attach to in the middle of the compartments, and this space would be wasted. And of course if harvesting, you would clean/harvest only one side, leaving the other side to continue filtering.

This half SURF8 or 8x shows the strings circled around 3 of the 4 holes where the upflowing air bubbles come up (red arrows). This demonstrates how the air bubbles create vertical pathways for light to shine down deeper into thick growth, which cannot happen with waterfalls.

For big sumps that don't have much room above or below the waterline, the SURF8 or 8x only needs a few inches because it floats like a boat. Able to handle 8 cubes a food a day, and with two independent growth compartments and lights, it's the biggest SURF® model and it lets you clean/harvest one compartment while the other compartment continues to grow/filter (this reduces the up/down nutrient effect between cleanings).
