This HOG1 or 1x scrubber® looks like its black shade cloth (not shown here) was kept on the top half, when it should have been removed. The shade from the cloth caused dark growth on the top; dark growth needs more light. If the cloth can be removed, the whole thing should start growing like the bottom.

Also, it should have been brushed clean much sooner, including the air tubing and circulation holes, every 7 to 10 days as is recommended.

A nice little HOG1 which looks to be on the side of a sump, probably to grow some live food for the saltwater tank above it.

This HOG1 or 1x shows an interesting brown spot in the middle. It looks like the top of the spot is where the water line was, either because it was installed where the water was low, or because the top air hole was clogged with growth (although it looks open now).

Not really sure what made the middle brown, but it might be over-illumination from not cleaning, since it's a pattern that looks like two LEDs in the center of a HOG1.

Certainly it needed a good brushing in a sink a while ago, because you can see the slime letting go in spots like the red arrow. The Green Grabber growth surfaces can hold on to slime longer than a waterfall screen, but it can't hold on forever.

This makes a good point: One reason you don't see waterfall screens with thick layers of slime like this is because waterfall screens can't hold onto slime very well; it just all falls off because it's not underwater.

The HOG1 (tm) is a smaller size model, medium power LED, that fits most nano back compartment glass walls, and all displays, and all separate sumps that sit below the display. It's a good choice if you don't know much about what you need for your nano, or if you just want to grow food for a larger tank.

Since HOG® scrubbers attach to both sides of the glass, there is some red light glow along the glass.

The little mighty HOG1® is the smallest of the HOG models with all the wet side covered with Green Grabber® growth surface.
