I have this idea for pumping water in from behind and through a plastic canvas screen.
I wonder if it's been tried and if there are any advantages/disadvantages

do you mean like a spray,,hitting the screen from the side?
No, I mean plumb the inlet into a sealed resevoir behind the screen and let the pressure of water force itself through the screen from behind with the light source placed in front.
It occured to me that this might improve efficiency ( and require less flow) as all the water would have to pass through the the algae rather than most of it just passing over the top of it.
I guess one problem would be that the perforations in the screen would clog up over time
It will clog and stop within a few days. Some people tried it by accident when they wrapped flexible screen material around the pipe instead of up into the pipe.
Ah well, another spark of genius cruelly snuffed out by a dose of reality.
